When I open my eyes, it’s dark, the rain has stopped, and the attackers are gone. I’m flat on my back, soaked, sore and stiff. The crunching of bone on my left heel is the last thing I remember.

As I’m lying there, an image of Tremble sprawled on the kitchen floor in a growing pool of glistening red blood flashes before my eyes. I blink to erase the vision, then see Yung Fo Jo peering down at me through the beveled glass of the KMT front door. I wonder if I’m seeing things. When I blink my eyes again, his face is gone.

Jack groans and lifts himself from the bottom of the steps, brushing mud off his fine suit coat and pants. For the second time in so many days he looks more like a rugby player than an attorney. He bows his legs to maintain his balance.

We stumble toward the car with our arms around each other, holding each other up. My heart thumps and my lungs tighten. I inhale deeply, opening my mouth wide for more oxygen.

“He said he’d get her,” I say, fumbling with my iPhone, but the battery is dead. “I’ve got to get to the office.”

I toss Jack the keys and hail a passing cab, pushing my hands on its hood as it slows to a stop.

“I’ll meet you at your house,” I yell as I climb inside. “Oh, the windshield wipers need replacing. Be careful!”

I turn to the cab driver. “One Montgomery and Market, Kuài! (fast!)”
